What Azure Virtual Machines does - and how it fails

Azure Virtual Machines are the compute foundation of most enterprise Azure estates - when VMs are impaired in a region, the applications, databases, and line-of-business systems running on them feel it immediately. VM incidents rarely take a whole region dark at once; they usually surface as failed allocations, unreachable VMs in one availability zone, or storage-dependency failures like the July 2024 Central US event.

  • VM allocation failures in a single availability zone (capacity or control-plane issues)

What SLA do Azure Virtual Machines carry?

It depends on deployment: VMs spread across availability zones carry a 99.99% monthly uptime SLA, availability sets 99.95%, and a single-instance VM with premium storage 99.9%. Falling below the target earns tiered service credits - but only if you file a claim.

Why is my VM down when Azure says Virtual Machines are fine?

Azure status reflects platform-level health. A single-zone event, an exhausted VM size in your region, an NSG or route-table change, or a disk/storage issue can take your VM out while the platform as a whole stays green.
